Children’s Opens East Inpatient Tower
Floors 6 and 7

Children’s Opens East Inpatient Tower Floors 6 and 7
Edwin K. Zechman, Jr., president and CEO of Children’s National, and staff at the opening of the 6th floor on January 12, 2010.
Children’s National continues to grow and expand our physical space to provide the best world-class care to patients. In winter 2010, Children’s National will open floors 6 and 7 in the East Inpatient tower, which are the final floors in the phased transition to the new Tower which began in November 2007.

The 6th Floor North unit is a 12-bed inpatient unit primarily for gastroenterology and intestinal rehab patients and opened on January 12, 2010. The 7th floor is a 50-bed inpatient unit for primarily pulmonary and medical care patients, and will open February 21, 2010.

The new space greatly expands our abilities to impact pediatric health outcomes and provide world-class care to patients from around the world. Once the move of the Medical Care Unit is complete, the existing main hospital will be used mostly for outpatient clinics and other support services.

Both the 6th and 7th floor units have the same world-class features as the rest of the East Inpatient Tower. Features of the new facility include:
  • Majority of inpatient rooms in the new tower are private or semi-private rooms with private bathrooms.
  • New furniture/room designs were selected based upon staff, family and patient recommendations to better meet the needs of our current and future patients and their families.
  • All rooms feature flat-screen televisions and Internet access for patients and families.
  • Units in the new tower have a decentralized design, meaning there are fewer, large nurses’ stations and more work areas in between individual rooms.
  • There is ample space in most patient rooms for parents or guardians who want to stay with their child. Special amenities include laundry facilities on most floors and additional sleeping space in quiet waiting areas.
