Children’s National Internship Program, Administered by Government and External Affairs

Background
The Children’s National Internship Program, administered by Government and External Affairs (GEA), offers high school, undergraduate, and graduate level students professional experience in a pediatric health care setting.  Interns obtain hands-on-experience in a department that is congruent with their career interests, receive one-on-one coaching from management staff, interact with Children’s National’s executive leadership, and participate in skill building workshops.

Interns work full time during the summer, for up to 12 weeks.  During the experience, interns work as a member of their assigned department, attend professional development seminars, and complete a final project for oral presentation.

CNIP Objectives:
  • To provide students with an opportunity to apply knowledge and skills obtained in the classroom to real life situations.
  • To educate students on the structure, policy, procedures, and operations of a pediatric healthcare institution.
  • To assist the intern in successfully transitioning from student to professional status.
  • To develop and refine critical thinking and problem-solving techniques.
  • To expose interns to diverse careers opportunities in the pediatric healthcare arena.
  • To provide professional development opportunities to enhance strengths and build upon weaknesses.
